Our Farming Community
The Sammamish River (the ‘Slough’) Valley has a rich farming history and today is the home of several farms that follow sustainable agricultural practices to grow some of the highest quality produce anywhere.
Many of the farms offer CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) programs, have a farm stand, and have a presence at our local Farmers’ Markets. The CSA programs in particular provide the farms with the annual funding needed to cover their seasonal start-up costs, and in return CSA subscribers are rewarded with a weekly box of fresh produce.
Over the last two years the closure of many restaurants and other food service programs has had a huge impact on our local farmers, so subscribing to a CSA program is a great investment and a win-win for both the farmer and you. If the cost of a whole share is challenging, some farms offer half-shares, you could even split the cost between yourself and a neighbor! Some farms have CSA sliding scale rates, and some take payments with SNAP benefits. There’s lots more - volunteer information, educational opportunities, and monthly community presentation information - at http://sammamishvalleygrange.org/ and check out https://eatlocalfirst.org for a broader perspective and maps.
Alternatively, stop by a farm stand or buy your weekly veggies at a Farmers’ Market. Look for local produce - and request more - at your regular grocery store.
