NEWS & politics
Immigration
The Supreme Court stepped aside to allow Trump to continue third-country deportations with no due process.
SSI - Earlier this week, a federal court issued a stay, which at least temporarily pauses cuts to Medicaid long-term care and healthcare for immigrants who are also receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI). This is a major victory and prevented many people from losing care on October 1.
Census
Proposed census changes include:
Only U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents to be counted which will exclude millions of refugees, asylum seekers and temporary visa holders
Removal of questions about race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation.
Changing the residency definition and tying residency to tax record documentation will severely distort counts for young adults, renters, and military families who move frequently.
Submit your comment by Nov. 2. Learn more from Hands Off Our Census, including details on how to submit a comment. (As of the time of this email, the Regulations.gov page was still showing the deadline of 10/13, but on 10/1 the date was extended to Nov. 2nd.)
Wall Street (from the Lever)
President Donald Trump’s top financial regulator just quietly passed a rule making it easier for a single president-appointed commissioner to unilaterally pass, alter, or repeal federal financial regulations.
That means a single hand-picked Trump regulator could wield complete power over Wall Street oversight without any checks — just as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is poised to decide on major rules related to cryptocurrency, mega-public offerings, and other corporate accountability matters.
“This is ultimately the end of independent financial regulators,” said Corey Frayer, director of Investor Protection at the consumer advocacy group Consumer Federation of America and a former senior adviser to former SEC Chair Gary Gensler.[1]
LGBTQIA
The Department of Education announced Sept. 28 that it had repealed federal regulations that protected students from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity under Title IX.
“The recission of critical protections codified under the former Title IX regulations is sure to place trans and queer community members at even greater risk for harm in our educational spaces,” Dr. Pilar Margarita Hernández Escontrías, Research Director for Seattle University School of Law’s Center for Civil Rights and Critical Justice, said in an email.
It was the “final step” of formally removing the Title IX protections from the Code of Federal Regulations, according to the education department’s fact sheet.[2]
H.R.1 Information and Updates
Thousands of non-citizens individuals and families lost eligibility for all federal health coverage on October 1, 2026, though they may remain eligible for state-only programs.
Starting January 1, 2027, Apple Health retroactive coverage periods for adults 19-64 will be reduced from 3 months to 1 month; children, pregnant women and other Apple Health programs will be reduced from 3 months to 2 months. Also, Apple Health recipients will required to renew their coverage every six months under the new directives.
Also in January 2027, more than 200,000 adults ages 19-64 in King County will need to provide new documentation to meet new work-related requirements or qualify for an exemption to continue their Apple Health coverage. For the 2027 calendar year, Apple Health recipients will be able to self-attest to the conditions that would qualify for work requirement exemptions, such as being "medically frail," being a full time student, or a caregiver to a minor. King County is working closely with Health Care Authority to develop systems to track this, more updates to come.
Important resources:

A DRAFT form that may be used for self-attestation of work requirement exemption
A recording of the complete training (6 hours)

As part of this meeting we will also be looking at the what's happening with our public lands. The current Administration has removed protections from more than 86 million acres of public lands, and millions more of our beloved landscapes and wildlife are in imminent danger of expanded mining, drilling, and timber harvests with limited consultation with Tribes and Nations and public comment. As our lands, waters, and habitats are under attack, UUs passed the 2026 AIW to Defend Against the Assault on Environmental Protections: Public Lands Rules and the Endangerment Finding.

From Sophia Way:
Donation Center & Amazon Support
We shared the wonderful news of financial support from Amazon, along with the possibility of remaining in our Donation Center through December 2027.
With the potential for a longer stay, we would like to increase our capacity to store frozen meals. If you know of anyone who may be able to donate a tall, upright freezer (not a chest freezer), please let us know.
Meals for the Shelters
We continue to have significant gaps in meal coverage at Sophia’s Place and Helen’s Place. A Meals Needed poster was shared and we would be grateful if Support Network members could share it with their networks, faith communities, workplaces, and other organizations. If you need an electronic copy while I;m out, please ask Karolina.
We also introduced Karolina, karolina.j@sophiaway.org, who is volunteering with us to coordinate meal deliveries and meal services. Karolina brings considerable experience and has already been helping us strengthen communication with meal donors, including sharing feedback about meals the women enjoy and identifying days where meal coverage is particularly low.
Karolina will share more about our meal program and current needs at the October Support Network meeting.
Food Rescue & Volunteer Drivers
We are working more closely with Nourishing Network while continuing our longstanding partnership with Eat Happy Now. Both organizations help rescue catered food and distribute it to The Sophia Way and other nonprofits.
Both are looking for volunteer drivers, particularly people available around 10:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. on weekdays. Pickups and deliveries are within the Bellevue area, and deliveries may go to The Sophia Way or another local nonprofit.
Please help us spread the word to anyone who may have weekday availability and would enjoy helping in this way.
Community Brunch – October 17
Our Community Brunch is coming up on Saturday, October 17, and there are a number of volunteer roles available. Please use the volunteer link included in this email to see where help is still needed.
We also need access to a truck or similar vehicle to transport supplies from the Donation Center to the brunch venue on Thursday, October 15 or Friday, October 16. If you or someone in your network may be able to help, please let us know.
Coming Home Gala
The Coming Home Gala is approaching, and there is one more day to purchase early-bird tickets before tickets move to the regular discounted price of $125.
Thank you to Bruno from Thrivent, who generously offered to purchase and fill a table.
We would love the Support Network’s help getting the word out about the Gala, including corporate sponsorship opportunities. We also discussed inviting a broad mix of guests, including community and civic leaders, prospective supporters, volunteers, and people who already know The Sophia Way well and can speak personally about why they choose to support our work.
Youth Engagement Committee
Our Youth Engagement Committee continues to support the women at Helen’s Place with a spa day every Saturday. The group currently needs additional makeup and jewelry.
We will curate a list of appropriate items, add them to our wish list, and share it with the Support Network.
Community Partnerships
We celebrated some wonderful recent engagement with our faith and community partners.
Sue attended a concert at Hope United Methodist Church, where The Sophia Way was selected as the benefiting nonprofit and received generous support.
Sujata visited St. Andrew’s Church and was struck by the congregation’s passion for our mission and by how many people already knew and cared deeply about The Sophia Way.
Sue and Anthony also recently visited Hope United Methodist Church for a National Charity League mother-daughter event, where we introduced participants to The Sophia Way and built kits together.
Housing Update
We celebrated the success of helping over 70 of women move into housing. At the same time, the lack of affordable housing remains a major barrier to helping more women transition from shelter into safe and stable homes.
This is one reason some of our housing numbers are slightly below last year’s. Our phenomenally talented, passionate case management team continues to work incredibly hard alongside the women we serve to identify housing opportunities and support successful transitions.
Staff Update
Kate will be joining The Sophia Way on a temporary contract through the end of the year as our new Development Coordinator. She will work closely with Anthony, Sue, Sujata, and Evie. We look forward to welcoming her to the team.
Jason had planned to attend the meeting but was unwell so he intends to come to our October Meeting.
Improving Support Network Communications
There was a request to make written notes or meeting captions available following future Support Network meetings so that anyone unable to attend can catch up more easily. We will look into options before the October meeting.
We will also explore creating a Google Group or another simple communication system to make it easier to keep Support Network members connected and ensure everyone receives meeting and calendar information.

FUNDING
The 2024-2029 VSHSL Implementation Plan has the 55 funding strategies in the link here with things like the short term engagement SE 9: 2024-2029-vshsl-implementation-plan.pdf SE 9 Short Term Engagement Projects Concept:
This strategy will fund entities to convene short-term community-building events and activities that provide social engagement opportunities for seniors and individuals from resilient communities in ways that meet their unique cultural needs. The competitively selected projects will be community-led, reflect the populations they serve, and cultivate a sense of belonging for seniors and members of resilient communities who will otherwise be isolated. The short-term nature of these engagement projects allows for several small, time-limited projects to be procured rather than multi-year programs that rely on deep funding.
Rationale: During the last VSHSL, communities requested adaptability in creating opportunities to engage with the most vulnerable members of their communities. DCHS piloted that flexible support using underspent VSHSL social engagement funds to create a Short-Term Engagement Projects for Seniors strategy.347 This strategy builds on learnings from that pilot program by increasing funding to aware more engagement projects and expanding to include projects from resilient communities.
