Immigration & for immigrants

This past Saturday, more than 330 communities across this country held vigils for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, Johan Sebastián Guerrero, Juan Jairo Coronilla Durán, and everyone else ICE has killed. Small towns and big cities. Church parking lots, courthouse steps, highway overpasses. In dozens of places, neighbors who had never organized anything in their lives stood on a corner and made it clear that we won’t ignore ICE’s cold-blooded killings of our neighbors. The Circle: Navigating the United States education system [SPANISH] Sept 16, 2026 Issaquah PTSA Council partners with the Circle and PEPS to provide this Parent Education event. This course is designed to provide the knowledge and tools to navigate the U.S. high school and college preparation system and to build effective partnerships with teachers and school staff, taking into account the diverse educational experiences of your home countries. A key aspect will be understanding cultural differences in communication and strengthening relationships with educators. Through dialogue and resource sharing, we aim to create a culturally inclusive environment where you feel empowered to advocate for your teen's success.

Beginner Level: Registration open from July 20-September 1, 2026 Students learn: · Vocabulary useful for work and daily life · Beginner level speaking and listening · Basic English grammar Students may spend three months to about one year in the program, depending on their learning needs. Intermediate and Advanced Level: Orientation Dates: Sept. 1, 2 | Classes: Sept. 21-Dec. 4 Students develop English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while learning how to: · Set career goals · Write a resume · Search and apply for jobs · Do a job interview. Intermediate and advanced level classes are designed for those who plan to get a job in the U.S. or enroll in job training/college to prepare to get a job within the next six months. Students participate in class for one quarter (about three months).

Issaquah New Affordable Housing To Open 2028 Trailhead Apartments, a 154-unit affordable housing development that aims to expand housing options for low-income families near transit and other community resources. The project, spearheaded by the King County Housing Authority (KCHA) in partnership with the city of Issaquah, advances the city’s push to increase its affordable housing supply. The eight-story development is located at 1550 Newport Way NW, adjacent to the Issaquah Transit Center and Tibbetts Valley Park. KCHA President and CEO Robin Walls said rental units will be available for families making 40% to 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI). The development is expected to be move-in ready by 2028, according to a press release from KCHA. News article HERE

Religious persecution

From the Sikh Coalition Legal Team (July 31, 2026):

This month saw the resolution of a years-long bias-based harassment case in the greater Seattle, Washington, area, where a multigenerational Sikh family was plagued by verbal harassment, property damage, and other destructive and disruptive behavior from area youth. The Sikh Coalition’s legal team interfaced with local and federal law enforcement and sought protective orders for the family from various perpetrators. Additionally, our attorneys are working to file an additional Habeas petition in Louisiana and have conducted additional intakes for sangat members detained in Kentucky, Mississippi, and Indiana. In addition to exploring additional legal protections for these individuals, we also work to provide them accommodations and/or access to their articles of faith.

Join us in person for two days of immersive learning at New Branches | 5011 31st. Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55417 and a pilgrimage with Rev. Jim Bear Jacobs from B’dote to George Floyd Square, the Renee Good memorial, and the Alex Pretti Memorial. The place-based story-telling about the history of the Doctrine of Discovery with Rev. Jim Bear Jacobs (Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican) is a new and incredible addition to the training and promises to be very powerful.

Through our 5-session training series, you will be accompanied by facilitators, Rev. Dana Neuhauser and one of the guide’s authors, Rev. Dr. Rebecca Voelkel (read their bios here). The training opens with two retreat-style sessions over a weekend, and then continues online for the final three sessions.

We encourage you to invite 3-5 members of your racial justice team or others who share your passion for racial justice and liberation in the life of your congregation. Being part of a team will help you gain the most from our training experience. If you are curious about how to bring reparations work to your church, you are welcome to join as an individual.

Cost is $750 per congregational team (entire group participating in the same cohort), or $250 if attending as an individual. We want this training to be financially accessible to everyone and have reduced or free rates as needed.

Renton Technical College Youth High School Completion (16-21)Explore options for high school completion with a diploma program or a GED program.

Diploma Program: Pass classes that award credit until you reach 24 required credits and other diploma milestones like HS Beyond Plan. Faster timeline than typical of a traditional HS. Eligibility: 16 years old and enough transfer credits to graduate by anticipated graduation year. Students can earn a maximum of 1 credit per month (10 months per school year). Expecting permission from the district to transfer or not currently enrolled elsewhere.

GED (English y Español) Considered a HS credential, pass exams in four subject areas: ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies. GED to Diploma Pathway ---> Continue with diploma after GED. Think of GED as a faster way to "test for credit." GED to College Pathway ---> Continue with free college with RTC after GED until you're 21. Eligibility: 16 by September 1 of the academic year. Not currently enrolled elsewhere or expecting permission from district to transfer.

Washington State Behavioral Health Advisory Council is recruiting new members --

individuals with experience with crisis services, reentry from correctional facilities, and youth.

Individuals from King County, North Sound (Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, San Juan Counties) and North Central (Okanogan, Chelan, Douglas, Grant Counties) regions of Washington State should consider applying. The BHAC advises and educates HCA on planning and implementing effective, integrated behavioral health services of substance use and mental health. These services promote individual choice, prevention, and recovery across the state.

Regular BHAC meetings occur every odd month from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Members are also expected to participate in a subcommittee that meets once a month and provide feedback on our Federal Block Grant application during odd number years. Pending available funding, eligible members with lived experience may qualify for a stipend. Members who are eligible for the stipend program may earn $57.00 an hour, up to $200.00 a day, participating in the council. Travel expenses including meals, gas, and lodging are also covered at the current per diem rates.

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Family Education and Curriculum Next: Aug 6, 2026 This training was developed to support family members, caregivers, or other supportive adults who are concerned about a young person’s substance use. It will define substance use disorder, explore different substances of misuse, and identify pathways to recovery. This training includes developmentally specific elements to address youth experiencing substance use. The training was developed in partnership with Washington State’s Health Care Authority (HCA), family members of an individual(s) experiencing a substance use disorder, and individuals currently in recovery.

Overdose Awareness Day Event Planned for August

DESC and community partners will host an event on Monday, Aug. 31, in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day. The event will bring together community members, substance use disorder providers, and people with lived experience.

This year's theme, "Overdose Is Preventable When We Act," highlights the importance of education, resources, and connection in preventing overdoses and supporting recovery. The event will honor those we have lost while centering community voices and the experiences of people who have been directly affected by substance use.

OPS offers an engaging and interactive monthly webinar series that combines the best of a book club with professional development. Each month, current Administrators and Supervisors of Peer Support Specialists will read one module from the new 80-hour Certified Peer Specialist training before our live session.

During each webinar, we will come together for discussions, breakout room activities, and group shares to explore the content. This is your opportunity to connect, share insights, and enhance your understanding of the principles and leading practices that are central to the work of Certified Peer Support Specialists.

Whether you’re just starting your journey as a supervisor or looking to refine your skills, this series offers a supportive and collaborative space to learn and grow together.

Applications are open now for affordable homeownership projects seeking funding in the 2026 Housing Trust Fund homeownership cycle.

This funding is available to community-based organizations, housing authorities, federally recognized tribes and local governments for the creation of new first-time homebuyer opportunities through the construction of new housing units, purchase and rehabilitation of existing housing units, affordability subsidies, and down payment assistance for low-income households in Washington.

RFP to Assess Region’s Behavioral Health Needs Apply by August 14 A new RFP is now open seeking a survey research organization to work closely with the King County Behavioral Health and Recovery Division (BHRD) to design and conduct a Needs Survey of King County residents. The BHRD Needs Survey is a population-based survey intended to better understand and assess the behavioral health needs of King County residents to ensure the mental health and substance use services the county administers is responsive to community need.
